First image: Acupuncture needles
Picture of the tiny, flexible needles used by acupuncturists which are about the size of a cat's whisker.
Second image: Acupuncture needles being inserted
Picture of three acupuncture needles in a patient's back. The needles are all single use and sterilized.
Third image: Electric stimulation on needles
Electric stimulation of acupuncture needles is primarily used in the treatment of pain. This is a very gentle stimulation to help tight muscles to relax. Although similar to a TENS unit in appearance, electric stimulation of acupuncture needles feels very different. Due to the needles being inserted into the skin, the stimulation can be much more subtle.
Fourth image: Cupping Therapy
Light suction is used on the skin to alleviate muscle spasms and connective tissue problems. The discoloration of the skin in the picture is due to the pressure of the cups. Although cupping looks unusual and leaves temporary round red marks on the skin, patients who love a deep massage, love cupping. It feels just the opposite of a massage. Instead of pressing into the body, cupping pulls. Cupping has been used widely by cultures around the world, including the Europeans, for thousands of years. It is believed it was first used in ancient Greece about 3,00o years ago. Below is an excerpt from a research trial on cupping.
ScienceDaily (June 25, 2009) — A German study published in The Journal of Pain showed that an external suction technique called cupping, is effective for providing temporary relief of pain from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Researchers from Immanuel Hospital Berlin randomly divided fifty-two CTS patients into treatment and control groups. Results showed that CTS patients given cupping treatments experienced a highly significant decrease in CTS pain and other symptoms. A single treatment improved functional ability and quality of life for a week. The research found patients tolerated the treatments very well.
