What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medicinal procedures in the world.  Acupuncture originated in China more than 3,000 years ago.  American practices of acupuncture incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries.  Acupuncture involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or an electronic stimulating machine.

How widely is acupuncture used in the United States?

In the past two decades, acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States.  The report from the Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture held at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1997 stated that acupuncture is “widely” practiced— by thousands of physicians, dentists, acupuncturists and other practitioners—for relief or prevention of pain and for various other health conditions.  According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of complementary and alternative medicine, 8.2 million U.S. adults had used acupuncture and an estimated 2.1 million U.S. adults had used acupuncture in the previous year.

Is acupuncture safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that sterile, nontoxic needles be used and that they be labeled for single use.  Relatively few complications from the use of acupuncture have been reported to the FDA in light of the millions of people treated each year and the number of acupuncture needles used.

Acupuncture research

Although acupuncture has been researched extensively in China, additional research has been conducted in the United States and Europe.  Examples of current research results are listed below:

Fibromylagia and acupuncture in August 2005-    http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2005-rst/3000.html

“This study shows there is something real about acupuncture and its effects on fibromyalgia”, says David Martin, M.D., Ph.D., Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist and the study’s lead investigator.  “Our study was performed on patients with moderate to severe fibromyalgia.  It’s my speculation that if acupuncture works for these patients with recalcitrant fibromyalgia—-where previous treatments had not provided satisfactory relief—-it would likely work for many of the millions of fibromyalgia patients.”

Knee Pain and acupuncture in December 2004- http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/dec2004/nccam-20.htm

“For the first time, a clinical trial with sufficient rigor, size, and duration has shown that acupuncture reduces the pain and functional impairment of osteoarthritis of the knee," said Stephen E. Straus, M.D., NCCAM Director. "These results also indicate that acupuncture can serve as an effective addition to a standard regimen of care and improve quality of life for knee osteoarthritis sufferers. NCCAM has been building a portfolio of basic and clinical research that is now revealing the power and promise of applying stringent research methods to ancient practices like acupuncture."
