Questions for your Acupuncturist
Deciding to undergo acupuncture can cause confusion for some patients because they do not know or understand what questions to ask to assure they are seeing a qualified practitioner. We have listed pertinent questions with the appopriate answers to assist the consumer in choosing the safest, most effective practitioner.
- Are you licensed by the state medical board as a Licensed Acupuncturist?
Licensed Acupuncturists are the most highly trained, board tested acupuncture practitioners in Ohio and are required to be licensed by the State Medical Board.
- Are you a Diplomate in Acupuncture with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine?
Diplomates in Acupuncture, NCCAOM, are acupuncturists who have completed after undergraduate education, a minimun of 2,000 hours of training and a clinic internship in acupuncture. Additionally, NCCAOM diplomates have passed a national board exam in acupuncture. NCCAOM offers the only nationally recognized board exam.
- How many hours of education and clinic training have you completed in acupuncture or Chinese Medicine?
Although several medical practitioners are allowed to practice acupuncture in Ohio, only Licensed Acupuncturists meet the World Health Organizations suggested level of training. Licensed Acupuncturists are the only practitioners who complete an 18 month clinic internship in acupuncture in addition to acupuncture education.
- What title do fully trained acupuncturists use?
Ohio law allows only fully trained acupuncturists to use the title of Licensed Acupuncturist or Registered Acupuncturist in order to distinguish them as highly trained acupuncture specialists.
Did you know?
Acupuncturists receive training in both Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine requires training in Western Medicine and their board exam includes a testing module in Western Medicine. Courses for acupuncturists learning Western Medicine include Anatomy and Phyisiology, Western Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease, Disease Pathology, Psychology and Pharmacology.
