WHY CHINESE MEDICINE

Chinese medicine has been continually practiced for over 4,000 years. The wisdom of Chinese medicine emphasizes the prevention of illness using its different treatment methods. The ancient Chinese saw the human body as a miniature version of the world around them. The core principles of Chinese medicine are that elements act in the body like they act outside. A healthy body is fluid and adjustable to the surrounding environment. However, a body that is imbalanced allows opportunities for health problems to occur. Chinese medicine works by re-establishing the balance between the body systems.

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique where a sterile, disposable needle, not much bigger than a strand of hair, is inserted into specific points on the body. The sensation triggers a relaxation response, which promotes the activation of chemicals and hormones that stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. The treatments are usually painless and patients often report a pleasant feeling during a session.

Tui Na is a Chinese medical massage technique that can quickly restore normal muscle functioning and structural integrity to the body. It can enhance the therapeutic effects of the acupuncture treatment.

Gua Sha is a press-stroking technique that is used in both facial rejuvenation and as a traditional intervention for various health conditions.

Facial Gua Sha is a gentle technique that stimulates blood flow to help tissue regeneration with out leaving any marks on the face.

Traditional Gua Sha, is used to create a temporary therapeutic petechiae called "sha". These marks can look similar to a sunburn or bruising at first and can disappear in a few hours. In some patients the marks may last up to a week. Modern research shows that traditional Gua sha produces an anti-inflammatory and immune protective effect.

Cupping is a technique in which cups are placed over specific areas of the body and a suction is created to draw up blood to the subcutaneous level. This is done in order to relieve congestion in the body. Like Gua sha, bruising marks will appear and can last for a few hours and up to a week, depending on the level of congestion in the area.

Moxibustion is a traditional therapy where heat is applied to specific points on the body using a Chinese herb called artemisia vulgaris, commonly know as mugwort. It is an important modality to use in many deficiency related conditions where the patient has a feeling of cold in the body.

Herbal medicine is prescribed based on a Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis. In order to meet the needs of each patient, patent formulas, tea pills, granules, and raw herbs will be discussed individually based on the severity of the condition, constitution of the patient, and comfort level with herbal medicine. I only work with the highest quality producers of herbal products.

What to expect the first visit?

After a thorough review of your health history, a diagnosis will be reached and a treatment plan will be established. The treatment plan will be adjusted accordingly at the time of each appointment. After the treatment one might feel a little light headed and blissed out from the endorphins released.
